It may feel like the 2020 election season just ended, but for the people trying to get candidates elected, election season never ends. With that in mind, Sussex County Democrats are hosting the 2nd Annual Dem-A-Thon to raise money for candidates in 2022.
The online event is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 29. Sussex County Democrats Chair Jane Hovington said the group started the event last year because COVID forced the cancellation of all their in-person events. She took inspiration from the telethons comedian Jerry Lewis used to hold.
“We had to do something different to keep the fellowship strong,” said Hovington, who was recently re-elected for her fifth year as Sussex County Democrats chair. “I always remembered the Jerry Lewis event, so that’s what we did.”
Hovington said all three of the state’s federal legislators – Sen. Tom Carper, Sen. Chris Coons and Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester – are scheduled to participate. She said U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., will also take part. Raskin helped work on the impeachment of former President Donald Trump, said Hovington.
Hovington said there are 15 items for the online auction, including scarfs, cufflinks and a charm bracelet from Biden’s inauguration, and there will be singing and comedic acts between political speeches. She said last year, the auction raised roughly $20,000.
Similar to last year, Hovington said 5 percent of all the money raised will be going to support families affected by COVID-19.
The Dem-A-Thon is scheduled to take place at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, May 29, and can be viewed at sussexcountydems.com. For more information, call 302-858-4310 or email desussexdemocrats@gmail.com.
