500 runners from 9 to 90 race over Halloween weekend

A three-day Halloween weekend provided the opportunity for three races with runners spanning the life cycle from 9 to 90. 

It began with the Sea Witch Half Marathon Oct. 29 at Cape Henlopen State Park, followed by the Sea Witch 5K Oct. 30 at Rehoboth’s Grove Park, and finished Oct. 31 with the Mariner versus Beacon season-ending cross country meet at Cape Henlopen High School. 

The half-marathon race with 96 finishers was won by Cara Scheibling, 35, of Moorestown, N.J, in a time of 1:26:38. Mike Sewell, 53, was second in 1:28:30.

The Sunday Sea Witch 5K had 360 finishers. Zach Newman of Brooklyn, N.Y., said fuggetaboutit to the following field, winning in 17:12. Mark Evans, 46, of Fairfield, Conn., was second overall and masters winner in 18:48.

Katya Geyer, 14, was overall women's winner in 20:25. Amy Dischier, 52, of Wilmington was the female masters winner in 21:11. 

The Beacon boys racing on the 1.86-mile course bested the Mariner squad 27-29 behind Ethan Thompson of Beacon (11:15), who edged Asher Woods of Mariner (11:17).  

The Beacon team won the girls’ race 22-37. Bree Terhune of Mariner won in a course record of 11:56. Shiloh O’Grady of Beacon ran a season-best time of 12:02 for second. 

A total of 516 runners finished what they started over a three-day weekend.
