Alley Oop hosts second girls-only skim clinic

August 10, 2024

Alley Oop Skim Camp and world-ranked female skimboarder Sydney Pizza hosted their second girls-only skim clinic Aug. 6-7, on the beach at St. Louis Street in Dewey Beach. More than 20 girls learned beginner and advanced skills of the sport in a nonthreatening, relaxed and fun atmosphere.

“It was a great way to close out the season for us at Alley Oop,” said Pizza, who is ranked No. 5 in the world. “To end on such a high note, and for me personally, to hit my goal of getting at least 20 little girls and future professionals together to skim and hopefully fall more in love with the sport was a dream. It honestly touched my heart in a special way that I could make this happen. It was even more amazing because with the help of my good friend and fellow professional woman, Amber Torrealba, we were able to surprise the girls with Freestyle watches for everyone and stickers aplenty. We also tie-dyed every shirt and got posters printed out for all the girls, for all the pros to sign.”

Current United Skim Tour rankings leader Julia Dias of Sunuga, Brazil, and 2023 No. 1 Chabe White of Mazunte, Mexico, were on hand to work with the young skimmers. They also held a mini Q&A session with the girls.

The pros will be showing off their skills at the 2024 Zap Pro/Am World Championship of Skimboarding set for Friday to Sunday, Aug. 9 to 11, on McKinley Avenue in Dewey Beach.
