The Cape Henlopen school board unanimously approved naming its latest school Lewes Elementary during its regular meeting Aug. 19.
Superintendent Robert Fulton said a committee began meeting in July and had considered several names including Lewessential, Beach Plum, The Flagship and other creative monikers before deciding on a traditional, geographic name for the school.
“When all was said and done, we decided on Lewes Elementary,” he said.
The former Lewes School on Savannah Road is under construction and will house students from Shields Elementary sometime in early 2022. Shields Elementary will then be torn down to make way for a new middle school.
