Children’s Beach House students, parents and guardians enjoyed a Sept. 21 visit with author Jordan Saez.
A Lewes resident and author of the children’s book series “Bear, Beaver and Bee” Saez presented her newest book, “Bee’s Bad Day,” to attendees.
The series explores challenges of childhood and the emotions that come with them. After the reading and conversation, students at the Children’s Beach House Margaret H. Rollins Child Development Center also took part in themed crafts and accompanying snacks. At the end of the event, Saez donated a complete, signed set of her children’s books to the Children’s Beach House library. “Some of our students are just discovering the joy of books,” said Kenna Chanoux, head teacher. “To be able to connect them with the person who created the book is such an exciting way to nurture their emerging literacy.”
While this visit was Saez’s first time inside the beach house, her family’s connection to CBH stretches back to the nonprofit’s founding in 1936, when her great-great-grandmother, Gertrude Maull, worked with some of the first children to attend Lydia Chichester du Pont’s summer home for children with disabilities. “She always talked about the children she met and loved here,” said Saez. “My mother often shared how much she both loved working there and how much she truly loved the Beach House children.”
Today, the youth development program at Children’s Beach House works statewide to build safe and supportive communities where children can develop their full potential, regardless of income or ability. In Lewes, the Rollins Child Development Center brings young children with speech and language delays or disabilities into a language-rich environment, alongside typically developing peers, where individualized attention helps them prepare for success in kindergarten and beyond.
Saez’s work is available wherever books are sold.
