Bay Pointe in Lewes isn't one of the area's larger communities, but it's working toward being among the healthiest.
To welcome the fall season, dozens of residents from teenagers to octogenarians crowded the street in front of the community's clubhouse Sept. 25 to set off on the second annual Bay Pointe-to-Pointe Walk/Run. The event had three walk/run tracks: 5K, 2 miles and 1 mile.
“This is one of my favorite events of the year,” said 80-year-old Dottie Woodbury, a retired teacher. “We have so many fabulous neighbors here in Bay Pointe, and it’s seldom we all get to see each other at the same time.”
Several local businesses stepped up to sponsor the event, including Allure Outdoor Lighting, Del-Coast Design & Build, Dust n Time, F & S Power Washing, Just n Time, Wash Buggy, Dream Vacations and Philly Pretzel Factory. The Bay Pointe Social Group supported the event.
The walk/run was spearheaded by Bay Pointe resident Dr. Ron Vederman, former Special Olympics International director of Organizational Development and Global Youth Education and Engagement.
"I've been a runner since the late 1960s," said Vederman. "Today seemed like a real throwback to the early days of participating in a run for just the pure joy of crossing a finish line with a bunch of other like-minded folks. Bay Pointe is a diverse community, but for two hours this morning, we could put behind us any political differences, social challenges, whatever, and just celebrate some good, healthy time together.”
