Georgetown man charged after stealing car in Long Neck
A Georgetown man faces charges after police say he stole a car Dec. 27 in Long Neck and later led police on a chase.
Police were called at 6:30 a.m. to a home in the 32000 block of Shoppes at Long Neck Blvd. when a car was stolen after the owner had started it to warm it up before leaving for work and then returned inside, police said. When the owner returned, the car was gone, along with personal items stored inside the vehicle.
About noon, members of the Delaware State Police Troop 4 Governor’s Task Force located the stolen vehicle and stopped it at the entrance to Pot-Nets Lakeside. The driver, Keemie Adkins, 33, initially stopped, but then fled, police said, driving aggressively and committing multiple traffic violations.
The pursuit was discontinued once the Delaware State Police Aviation Section began tracking the vehicle. Adkins crashed into a tree and abandoned the vehicle in Avalon Woods, leaving inside a friend, 41, of Georgetown, whom Adkins had picked up in the morning. Police said the passenger had repeatedly asked Adkins to stop the vehicle during the pursuit but was not allowed to exit. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed drug paraphernalia and two baggies of suspected heroin.
Nearby troopers and an officer from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control apprehended Adkins after a brief foot chase. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
A computer check revealed that Adkins has a suspended/revoked driver’s license. He was transported to Troop 7, where he was charged with felony theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of theft under $1,500, first-degree reckless endangering, disregarding a police officer signal, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled/counterfeit substance, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple traffic offenses.
Adkins was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $15,440 cash bond for charges related to the pursuit, and $4,000 unsecured bond for charges related to the stolen vehicle.
Delaware State Police said the public should take precautions to safeguard their vehicles and belongings, including locking all vehicles and never leaving them unattended while running.
