Bayhealth’s 24 new physician residents recently celebrated their transition from medical school student to physician resident with a white coat ceremony. This tradition has new physician residents trade their short white coats worn in medical school in favor of the long white coats worn by practicing physicians.
The celebration is also the unofficial launch of the new physician residents’ first year of residency in their respective programs.
“For our community, the residents are the faces of our teaching program,” said Terry Murphy, FACHE, Bayhealth president and CEO. “The relationships they build with their patients make lasting impressions – and we trust the residents won’t take this responsibility lightly. At the end of their residencies, we hope Bayhealth and Delaware is a place that the residents come to love and enjoy – a place they want to be for years to come.”
As a teaching hospital, Bayhealth has graduate medical education residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine and, new this year, general surgery. In spring 2023, Bayhealth residency programs will expand when six residents will be matched to comprise the first class of its emergency medicine residency program.
“We look to our newest residents to bring meaningful new ideas, develop creative approaches and make important discoveries to help us continuously improve the core of healthcare for the communities we serve,” said Gary Siegelman, MD, MSc, Bayhealth senior vice president, chief medical officer and GME designated institutional official.
In just two years, Bayhealth has added 45 physician residents and opened two new practices – Bayhealth Family Medicine, Dover, and Bayhealth Internal Medicine, Milford, where teams have cared for 1,600 patients in just one year. This year, these new residents, including those in general surgery, will add even more patient care visits and surgical hours.
