Call issued for artists for Phase 2 of Art on the Riverwalk Tour

Deadline for submissions is Jan. 20
December 10, 2013

After the successful launch of Art on the Riverwalk Tour's Phase 1, in which six public art works were created and placed in the center of town, Downtown Milford Inc. is now launching Phase 2. All artists living or working in Kent and Sussex counties are invited to apply to create an original work of art reflecting Milford’s branding of River Town. Art Town. Home Town.

As part of DMI's commitment to partnering with local organizations, with funding made available in part by the Delaware Division of the Arts and with the goal of making downtown Milford a more vibrant, enjoyable and fun place to work, live, play and shop, the organization is launching the second of three phases of public art works to be located along the Riverwalk. Each phase will have six artworks for a total of 18 over three years.

The project is based on a boat, the Augusta, which was built in Milford in 1927 of native white cedar. It was the first of the luxury yacht line produced by the Vinyard Shipbuilding Co. In 2010, Augusta was restored by present owners Sudler and Joan Lofland and put back into service at the yard that built the boat 83 years ago. Today, the Vinyard Shipbuilding Co. is Delaware's only remaining shipbuilding site of the original seven. It reflects the shipbuilding history and the talented Milford craftsmen who worked here.

“This is an exciting, innovative way of approaching public art. This year's artists loved participating in the project,” said Lee Nelson, executive director of DMI. "We look forward to this new round of artists' submissions.”

Artists' resumés should focus on outdoor public art experience, if any, and they should submit a completed, colored concept drawing of their proposed work with an explanation of media to be used. Artists must show a willingness to mentor a Sussex or Kent county high school student as they create the artwork and teach the student how to do outdoor art. If accepted, this will require a formal background check. Each artist must provide his or her own space in which to create the artwork. Artists will be compensated for their work and materials.

The deadline for artists' concept drawing and resumé submission to Downtown Milford Inc. is Jan. 20, 2014. For full details and concept drawing, download the application at downtownmilford.org or contact Nelson at 302-839-1180, or email Director@DowntownMilford.org.
