Cape baseball beats Saint Mark’s 10-6 on Senior Day

A trio of seniors combined for nine of Cape’s 10 runs in its come-from-behind victory over Saint Mark’s on Senior Day May 11.

Trailing 1-0 to start the bottom of the first, Cape’s Brian Fleming led off with a single before fellow senior Gage Joseph hit a dinger to center to give the Vikings a 2-1 lead. Saint Mark’s plated four in a big third inning to give the visitors a 5-2 advantage. Cape senior Isaac Terhune’s single in the bottom half scored Fleming, but the Spartans struck back in the top of the fourth to maintain a three-run advantage, 6-3.

Scoring a run each time he safely reached base, Fleming continued the in-game pattern in the bottom of the fourth to spark the Vikings’ rally. Jameson Tingle led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, advancing to second on Jase Mitchell’s single. Brady Kosc became the second batter struck in the inning, loading up the bases for Fleming, who singled to advance all runners and score Tingle.

With his second extra-base hit of the game, a double, Joseph drove in Mitchell and Kosc. Terhune’s single sent Joseph home before three quick outs ended the inning. The damage was done, and Cape led 8-6.

Taking over on the mound in the fifth, junior Jacob Smith stifled the Spartans’ offensive, striking out six over the next three innings to keep Saint Mark’s off the board.

A Fleming at-bat led to another run in the bottom of the fifth, this time a sacrifice fly that scored Mitchell. Junior Trey Hitchock’s blast in the bottom of the sixth wrapped up the scoring, as the Vikings sailed to a 10-6 victory, handing Saint Mark’s its fourth loss.

Joseph’s four RBIs led the team, while his classmates Terhune (three) and Fleming (two) provided the rest of the scoring outside of Hitchcock’s solo shot. Fleming led the team in runs scored and Terhune in hits, both with three.

Cape will try to win its 16th game when it wraps up the regular-season schedule Tuesday, May 14, at Delmar.
