You would think that a 21-2 season and a state championship title in 2022 would satisfy Cape baseball coach Ben Evick, but nothing is further from the truth, as the Vikings reload for the 2023 campaign.
“We're very excited for the upcoming season, as these guys want to pick up right where they left off in 2022,” said Evick. “They know the 2022 season is over and it's time to start writing their own book for 2023.”
The Vikings lost nine players to graduation, so Evick is looking for underclassmen to step up and lead the squad to the promised land of Frawley Stadium.
“We are super excited to have Gage Joseph back, as he looks to be one of the top players in the state,” Evick said. “We have very good senior leadership returning, and we feel like we are pretty deep on the mound this year.”
Nick Cox, Joseph, Timmy Hitchcock, Brogan Evick, Owen Daminger and Barritt Ross will be hurling the rock for the Vikings, while newcomers who will get innings include junior Reed Thompson and sophomore Jaxon Clampitt.
Brenn Scott returns behind the plate for the Vikings. He also led the team offensively in 2022. Isaac Terhune, Brian Fleming and newcomer Lex Wescott are battling for a starting spot at third base.
The Vikings will open on the road Thursday, March 23, at Caesar Rodney, then travel to Archbishop Spalding (Md.) Saturday, March 25. Cape’s first home game will be Thursday, March 30, against Delmar.
