Cape girls’ basketball has off night, but still defeats Riders

December 20, 2024

Cape senior Hayden Hudson and Havyn Greene each recorded a double-double to lead the Vikings to a 54-32 victory over the Riders at Caesar Rodney Dec. 19.

The 6-foot-1 Hudson delivered with 14 points and 14 rebounds, creeping closer to 500 rebounds for her career. She also scored two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Greene, at 6-foot-2, scored 11 points and snagged 11 rebounds. She added three steals and a block.

Senior Faith Re, battling an injury, tallied six points, four rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Cape coach Pat Woods played eight different players in the first quarter for the first time this season in an attempt to find the right combination.

The Vikings started off slow, shooting a chilly 10-for-30 (33%) from the field in the first half, but improved in the second half, hitting 9-for-21 (42%).

The team turned up the attack on the basket in the second half. They hit 14-of-18 foul shots.

Cape finished the first half 25-13, then laid it on in the second half to outscore the Riders 29-19 and pick up their fifth win of the season 54-32.

“I didn’t think we executed well at all,” said Woods. “It wasn’t clean for us, and we didn’t shoot it particularly well. But they played great defense and caused us to just have to make plays. I was happy with our defense and rebounding. Havyn dominated the glass in the first half, and Hayden did in the second. It’s good for us to be able to win different ways. Next up is Christmas. Then the biggest test so far this year in the Governor’s Challenge in Salisbury Dec. 27.”

“I thought we had a rocky start,” said junior Mya Yngve. “But we really worked as a team near the end and got it together to finish strong. We are all so positive and got what we wanted in the end, which was a win.”

“I think communication really helped us get through it to the end tonight,” said Hudson. “The first half, we were sloppy and not communicating. When we slowed down the game and played our version of the game, we got a lot better. We run the game. We can’t let them run it for us.”

The Cape JV team defeated the Riders JV 31-16.

Kallea Eleazar scored 14 points, while Laura Lima tallied 10.
