Cape girls’ basketball powers past Polytech 66-27

January 22, 2024

The Cape girls’ basketball squad had little trouble picking up its third win in a row with a 66-27 running clock victory over the Panthers Jan. 18 at the Vikings’ big house.

The Vikings could do no wrong in the first quarter while substituting freely, taking a 28-2 edge at the first buzzer and a 40-10 lead into the halftime break. The third quarter found the Vikings earning a running clock, and they finished off the game with a 39-point victory.

Three players scored double figures, with Amalia Fruchtman grabbing 18 points. Faith Re hit for 15 with three from behind the three-point arc. Mya Maull garnered 10.

Starting center Hayden Hudson added to her team-leading rebound count, snagging seven while knocking away four Polytech shot attempts.

Junior transfer Havyn Greene was a force off the bench, pulling down seven rebounds and blocking a shot.

“I think I bring energy when I come into the game,” said Greene. “Everybody picks up the energy, and I can be aggressive and the team feeds off it. I know my role, and I’m ready when I’m put in.”

Sophomore Jurnee White came in and hit a three the first time she touched the ball.

“I try to stay ready to go in when my team needs me,” said White. “I play full-out every day at practice so I’m ready at the coaches’ call.”

Junior Kayden Borge-Williams had five rebounds and five steals in 13 minutes of play.

“I love it when the band comes to the game,” said Cape head coach Pat Woods. “The more people in the gym, the better. I love it. I didn’t think this game was going to be like this. They are a good team with good players, but our team is really deep this season.”

Cape travels to Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Jan. 23, to take on the Riders, a team they defeated 61-22 in a Jan. 5 game at Cape.
