Cape pancakes Panthers, stacking five for 39-34 dual-meet victory

February 2, 2012

The Little Big House of Pancakes was slaphappy crazy Feb. 1 as a total of nine grapplers got their tickets punched early.

And - an odd observation - in a match of 14 bouts featuring visiting Polytech with an undefeated record of 9-0, a team that has already captured the Henlopen Southern Division and a berth in the Division II state championship duals, and Cape Henlopen, fighting for a spot in the Division I duals, it was pretty friendly.

The match saw eight pins and an injury default in 14 weight classes and was iced for Cape when heavyweight Thomas Ott pinned Michael Reed 25 seconds into the second period, giving Cape a 39-28 advantage.

Polytech's Kody Stevens, 106, pinned Eriq Gloria for the final score of 39-34.

“We're happy with our season so far. I feel like we're peaking at the right time. Both teams really wanted this match tonight; both sides handled themselves well. We wrestled a good hard match and congratulations to the Vikings; they are having a great season,” said Panthers coach Dan Boone.

Cape guys winning by pin included 126-pounder Austin Smith over Paul Bergold, 138 Garrett Smith over Austin Rains, 145 Justin Lopez over Michael Roth, 160 Tadeo Gonzalez over Kyle Hyde and heavyweight Thomas Ott over Michael Reed.

'We finally went out and got bonus points with five pins, and we needed them,” Cape coach Chris Mattioni said. “And we had two great close matches go our way."

Sammy Mohr, 152,  got a takedown in overtime to defeat Kurt Bentely 5-3. "Those two guys could meet in a conference final and state final,” Mattioni said. ”That was a six-point swing and we won by five."

Another six-point swing was Andrew Flowers, 182, getting a takedown late in the third period to defeat Anthony Mariboli 2-1.

Aaron Dennis, 170, beat Edward Waishes 7-0, but battling the flu and a strained medial ligament, Dennis refused to be collateral damage and powered through the pain for the victory.

Polytech pins were 113 Andrew Schmeusser over Jeb Monigle, 120 Jacob Hosfelt over Germaine Sunkett, 195 Cory Smith over Nick Carroll, and 106 Kody Stevens over Eriq Gloria.

Cape's J.J. Currie, 132, lost to Trevor White 11-2 and Spencer Brittingham, 220, wrenched his ailing shoulder and lost by injury default.

Cape is now 8-3 on the season and faces Laurel Wednesday, Feb. 8, and Salesianum Saturday, Feb. 11.
