The Cape soccer team ended its 2020 season in the DIAA quarterfinals with a 2-0 loss to Salesianum on the turf of the new Abessinio Stadium in Wilmington.
Cape senior goalie Matt Panyko faced a barrage of 10 Sallies corner kicks and 14 shots, but kept the Vikings in the game by stopping 10 scoring attempts.
The Vikings were able to get off just two shots on Sals goalkeeper Sam Donnelly. He was credited with a save.
“Our guys implemented the game plan pretty well,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “Ultimately our undoing was that we gave up too many corners, had some sub-par defensive clearances, and when we did win the ball, we didn’t hold possession long enough to create attacking chances. I am very proud of our guys.”
The score was 0-0 at the half. Sallies senior Ethan Hinds headed in a corner off the foot of Noah Holgado at the 52-minute mark, then added an insurance goal via a pass from Jake Ross at 63 minutes.
The Vikings finish their season at 7-5-1, while Sallies will face Middletown in the semifinal matchup Wednesday, Dec. 9. Middletown defeated Milford 2-1 in the other quarterfinal round.
“Our seniors re-established us as a tournament team,” Kilby said. “They set the bar for our next group to meet or exceed. I am excited to see what our seniors accomplish in the future, and coach Rupar and I are ready for August 2021 so we can get after it again.”
