Cape softball defeats Sussex Academy 4-2
Cape junior Natalya Roundtree’s two-run single in the top of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Vikings to their sixth win of the season, a 4-2 victory over Sussex Academy.
The Seahawks intentionally walked Jay’lyn Slater to load the bases and set up a force at any base, but Roundtree stepped up with a single to win the game.
Sophomore Bri Windish went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ava Calciano went 2-for-4, while Abby Marsh went 1-for-3.
Windish started for the Vikings, allowing two hits while striking out two. Marsh came in from the bullpen to allow just one hit. She struck out four.
“It was not our best game,” said Cape coach Mike Tkach. “But once again, the girls continued to battle all seven innings. Both Abby and Bri did a great job pitching. I’m so proud of and happy for Natalya as she continues to produce for us. The team is coming together. We’ve got to continue to be aggressive and get better each day at practice. The challenge we are working on is how to be great teammates to each other. We have to continue supporting and picking each other up when needed — trust one another and depend on each other.”
Seahawks eighth-grader Grayce Glover went 2-for-3 and pitched all seven innings. She struck out one batter. Sophomore Carson Gesuero had an RBI. Sophomore Dymond Steele went 1-for-2 with a double.
The Vikings move to 6-4, while the Seahawks are 5-6.
