The Cape softball team hit three homers against Polytech May 3, but the Vikings could not hold a one-run lead in the seventh inning, as the Panthers scored three runs to take a 13-11 victory back to Woodside.
The Vikings jumped out quickly, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third, including a three-run homer by freshman Alvina Heers. Jay’lyn Slater delivered a 2-for-4 performance, homering in the sixth, knocking in five RBIs. Abby Marsh went yard in the fifth. Milena Buehler and Abi Crouch each had an RBI. Ava Calciano went 1-for-2, while Bri Windish went 1-for-3.
Polytech bounced back in the top of the fourth, scoring seven runs, then added three more in the sixth. The Vikings went into the seventh inning up 11-10, but surrendered three runs in the seventh.
Marsh pitched six innings, striking out eight while walking four Panthers. Bri Windish pitched the third inning before Marsh returned in the fourth.
Mara Everton garnered the victory for the Panthers, striking out seven batters. Cheyenne Silves came in from the bullpen in relief.
The Panthers were led by Rachel Carey with five RBIs. She had two doubles. Julia MacConnell had a homer, a double and three RBIs. Mackenzie Mitchell, Hannah Megonigal and Cheyenne Silves each knocked in a run.
“Both teams battled all day in all aspects of the game,” said Cape head coach Shannon Timmons. “Our kids worked hard for seven innings, and we just came up short in the end. We had some timely hits and the home runs by Heers, Marsh, and Slater powered our offense. Slater is playing well behind the plate handling our pitching staff. Abi Crouch had a timely hit for us late in the game, too. We had some untimely errors that cost us; we will keep working to improve in those areas.”
The Vikings return to action Thursday, May 5, when they travel to Milford.
