Cape, Sussex Academy girls shine at state swim championships

The Cape and Sussex Academy girls’ swim teams made it to the top 10 in the state, as the Seahawks placed fifth with 122 points and the Vikings took eighth place with 112 points in the DIAA State Championships Feb. 22 at the University of Delaware’s Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium.

Taking the top spot was Ursuline Academy with 341 points, with the other top 10 as follows: Charter School of Wilmington garnered second with 245, St. Mark’s took third with 157, Tower Hill placed fourth with 137, Wilmington Friends showed for sixth with 119, Mount Pleasant took seventh with 114, Padua placed ninth with 11 and Brandywine garnered 10th with 100.

Cape senior Jenna Reinhold was awarded academic All-American.

“We had a lot of potential going into states, and it was great to have success as a team,” said Reinhold. “This is the first time since 2021 Cape girls have been on the podium, individually or with a relay, so that was really exciting.”

Sussex Academy’s Anna Mumford was the only downstate swimmer to reach the top of the podium, with a 4:58.07 time in the 500 freestyle.

“It was so much fun to race that event,” said the Seahawks freshman. “It was not my best time, which I got at conferences, but I’m still proud of myself and thankful for my team for cheering me on.”
