The 2015 Cape Henlopen volleyball team held its annual end-of-season banquet Nov. 22 at Fish On restaurant in Lewes. It was an evening of sharing memories of the 13-3 season and a final goodbye to the Class of 2016.
Cape Gazette photographer Dan Cook was the guest speaker for the event. He spoke of the team's record-setting 13 wins, and the spirit and determination shown by the Lady Vikings throughout their 2015 season.
First-year head coach Tyler Coupe presented the varsity players with their letters and accolades from the Henlopen Conference.
Seniors Kira Vitella and Alison Palmer, and sophomore Logan Shuttleworth received first-team all-conference awards, while senior Izzie Marsico received second-team honors. Junior Abby E'Nama garnered honorable mention all-conference. Palmer was also chosen as team MVP while Marsico received the team's Sportsmanship Award.
Vitella was awarded the Golden Flamingo Award by Coupe. The award is presented to the player who exemplifies what it is to be the ultimate player, willing to put in the work to better herself as well as the team. A player who pushes her teammates when needed, but is first to pick them up when they're down. The player who leads not by just her words, but by her actions.
Cape junior varsity coach Pam Coupe presented Abigail Thomas with the 2015 JV Sportsmanship Award.
"Next year will be a challenge for sure," said Tyler Coupe. "We are losing seven extremely talented players and leaders. That being said, we had several underclassmen who had significant playing time, so I'm excited to see where they take the direction of the returning and new players next season."
