Cape wrestling places second at Governor Mifflin tournament
Cape 139-pound senior grappler Josh Wright won his first tournament bracket Dec. 30 at the Governor Mifflin holiday tournament. The hip skimboarder will always remember Shillington, Pa., and know the time of day. Wright was presented with a converted clock trophy, the award going to the champion for wins by pin in the shortest amount of elapsed time.
Wright’s four wins were all by pin – 48 seconds, 58 seconds, 50 seconds and in the championship bout over David Voghel of Sun Valley in 3:21.
Sun Valley won the team title with 249.5 points followed by Cape with 171, Elizabethtown with 147, Souderton with 144 and Plymouth Whitmarsh with 128.
There were 22 teams in the two-day tournament competing over 13 weight classes.
C.J. Fritchman (172), back off the injured list after a shoulder sprain at the Beast of the East tournament, was also crowned a tournament champion.
Alex Taylor (215) lost 3-1 in the finals to Dom Demenco of Pottsgrove, giving up a takedown in the final seconds of the match.
Other place and/or point producers for Cape included Tripp Gannon, fourth, 22 points; Cale Baker, four points; Max Meadows, fifth, 15.5 points; Holt Baker, fourth, 18.5 points; Kingston Davis, five points; Andrew Schaen, sixth, 12 points; and Hayden Wheeler, seventh, 12.5 points.
“The team wrestled well,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “I’m happy for Josh and encouraged that C.J. is back healthy, and our freshmen Gannon, Cale Baker and Kingston all did well and scored points. Tripp Gannon’s fourth place and making the podium is a huge boost for his confidence.”
Cape will wrestle at Dover at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4. The Vikings will travel to the Iron Horse Duals Jan. 6-7 at C. Milton Wright High School in Maryland.
