The Cape wrestling team opened the 2012-13 competitive season Dec. 7 at the Bloomsburg Invitational by crowning four champions: Elliot Young 132, Austin Smith 145, Aaron Mattioni 160 and Thomas Ott 220 all sailed and slammed through their brackets undefeated.
Sean Sheehan 138 and Andre Flowers 182 placed third. J.J. Currie placed fourth.
“Elliot Young and Sean Sheehan both looked great in the first varsity tournaments, and Austin Smith just dominated,” coach Chris Mattioni said.
The Vikings opened the dual-meet season at home Dec. 12, defeating Seaford 57-14. The match started at the 138-pound weight class with a pin by Sean Sheehan over T.J. Knight at 3:45.
In the 145-pound class, Smith pinned Quasean Deputy at 5:45. At 152, Currie decisioned Devanta Harmon 15-10. Cape's Andre Flowers, 182, pinned Adrian Mathews at 1:20. Cape's Hunter Dailey, 195, was taken down in the final seconds by Elijah Holbrook and lost 4-2. Viking Nick Carroll, 285, decisioned Darron Durrell 5-2. Emmerson Fajardo, 103, pinned Lauren Jones in 42 seconds. At 113 pounds, Jamier Powell of Seaford pinned Jackson Zolper at 3:05. Daquan Bailey, 120, of Seaford “teched’ Anthony Arias at 2:14. Elliot Young, 132, of Cape closed out the match with a 14-12 win over Pierre Mondestin.
Cape moves on to wrestle at Indian River Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15 in the Battle at the Beach tournament, then will wrestle at Caesar Rodney Wednesday, Dec. 19.
