Catherine Jean Thompson, volunteer extraordinaire

March 10, 2025

Catherine Jean Phelan Terry Morin Thompson, a native of Syracuse, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home Sunday, March 2, 2025, surrounded by her entire family. Born June 29, 1944, to First Lieutenant John F. Phelan and Catherine Jean Taylor. Jean graduated from Most Holy Rosary High School of Syracuse in 1962 and Syracuse University in 1966. She resided in McLean, Va., and enjoyed many years of fun at their house in Henlopen Acres.

Jean is survived by her husband of 50 years, Richard “Dick” Thompson; daughters, Kristin Anne Bonacci and Catherine Elizabeth Power; and beloved grandchildren, Stephen and and Kaitlin Bonacci, and Kenny and Catie Power.

Jean’s first husband, Marine Capt. Richard G. Morin was killed in action during the Vietnam conflict.

Jean was a volunteer extraordinaire and dedicated her life to service. Her favorite volunteer opportunities were those involving Kristin and Beth. Jean volunteered in the classroom and participated in a multitude of activities for her daughters. She chaired numerous school fundraisers and also served as president of the parent-teacher association at their elementary, middle, and high schools

Jean served in multiple civic and political organizations, including the Junior League of Washington, D.C., the Congressional Club, The Meridian House, ARCS, Presidential Conventions, the Smithsonian Women’s Committee, and many more. It did not matter if she was organizing an event for an elementary school or a major event in Washington, D.C. Her exquisite taste, attention to detail, and personal touches made every event exceptional and made all involved feel special

Twelve members of Jean’s family attended Syracuse University. Jean was passionate about giving back to Syracuse and served on the College of Arts and Sciences advisory board and the DC Regional Council. She also energized a program for spouses of university trustees when Dick served as board chair. She loved working on philanthropic efforts with various athletic programs and development, especially the Remembrance Endowed Scholarship Program and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families. Her friends honored this effort with a special plaque in Hendricks Chapel, acknowledging her dedication to the scholars and her belief in the healing power of student scholarship to foster understanding – advancing the promise of a better world for all.

Jean had an amazing ability to remember the important milestones of people in her life. Over the years, she sent hundreds of thoughtful handwritten notes expressing her genuine care and appreciation for those around her.

Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The memory of her radiant smile and care and concern for others will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, March 17, at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean, Va. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Syracuse University Remembrance Endowed Scholarship Program, remembrance.syr.edu/giving; Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Family, ivmf.syracuse.edu/support-ivmf; Little Sisters of the Poor, littlesistersofthepoor.org/donate; or a charity of choice are appreciated.
