Celebrate Father's Day at Lewes Farmers Market

June 14, 2017

On Saturday, June 17, at 8 a.m., the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will open to a celebration of Father's Day in the Park. In honor of Father's Day, the market will offer a free raffle for a charcoal grill donated by Best Ace Hardware, and Lion Gardner, executive chef/owner of the Blue Moon, will grill meats from market vendors in the Demo tent at the market. Come to the market's information tent to fill out a card to enter the raffle. The winner will be drawn at 11 a.m.

In addition to lamb, pork and beef at the market, there are 35 vendors offering the best of early summer fruits and vegetables, lettuces, baked goods, freshly laid eggs, and fresh cut flowers.

Children's Story Time at the Market begins at 9 a.m. Hope Ellsworth from the Lewes Public Library will read “Waiting for Wings” by Lois Ehlert. an inventively designed picture book about caterpillars' metamorphosis into butterflies. All children and their adults are welcome to come to Children's Story Time, a partnership program between the HLFM and the Lewes Public Library. The Story Time Tent is located near the children's playground at the park.

At 10 a.m., Gardner will grill Bavette steak from Reid Angus as well as meats from Springfield Lamb and Elysium Farm. Lion has been the executive chef at The Blue Moon since 2006 and co-owner since 2008. His cuisine and cooking style blend locally and seasonally available ingredients. The Blue Moon has received numerous accolades since 2008 for food, wine and service.

The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 to each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market. WIC will also be accepted at the market when coupons become available.

The market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Ample parking can be found at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School parking lots (intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive), a short walk to the market.

The HLFM's Wednesday Outdoor Market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is now open from 8 to 11 a.m. with an expanded number of vendors. The market is located at Crooked Hammock Way and Kings Highway in Lewes.

The market provides a Veggie Valet service to help customers carry bags and melons (when they are in season) back to their cars. This service is located right outside the HLFM Information Tent.

In case of inclement weather the market moves to Shields Elementary School parking lot.
