A December frostbite meet featuring races with multiple heats qualifies as ironic.

Sussex Central visited Cape Dec. 5 under “not that bad” weather conditions that chilled spectators like heads of iceberg lettuce after three hours of track and field.

The number of events was limited; they included the 800 meters, 55-meter hurdles, 55-meter dash, 400 meters, 1,600 meters, 200 meters and 4-by-400-meter relay.

The field events were the long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault and shot put.

Team scores were not kept. There were no roster numbers to identify athletes, and a day later, results were hard to hunt down.

“Part of our team ... is back at Central practicing,” said Central coach Derek Shockro. “We are going to a meet in Virginia Beach this weekend.”

Cape will compete in the Alvernia Holiday Classic Saturday, Dec. 9, near Reading, Pa.

Cape has a roster of  93 boys and 84 girls. The Sussex Central roster includes 38 boys and 37 girls.
