Christine Rogers, loved animals

May 2, 2022

Christine (Chris) Rogers of Millsboro passed away Monday, March 21, 2022.  Born Nov. 30, 1949, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Lucille and Frank Rogers, Chris later moved with her family to Sparta, N.J.  While Chris was always a proud native New Yorker, she believed Sparta to be the most beautiful place in the world, and cherished each time she was able to go back and visit.

Chris graduated from the American University with a degree in political science and later earned a degree in accounting from the University of Maryland.  Her career began as an intern on Capitol Hill and included many prestigious nonprofits in the D.C. area, where she served as a financial executive.

After completing college, Chris settled in the D.C. area and married the love of her life, Joseph VanDercook.  The two connected at a dart bar in D.C. (Christine was an excellent dart player.)  They were married at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Sparta.  They settled in Bowie, Md., and later Darnestown, Md., where they raised their family.

Chris was an avid reader with a love of all things John Grisham.  In her youth, she was an accomplished equestrian, often competing on her favorite horse, Bosco.  Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Chris knew of her unwavering love of animals. It was not unusual for her to have two or three adopted dogs in her home, or on the couch, or anywhere else the doggies chose to be.  In fact, Chris volunteered at an animal shelter after retiring to Delaware.

Christine is survived by her three children Joseph Rogers VanDercook, Anne Rogers VanDercook and Christina Rogers VanDercook, whom she loved with all her heart.

She also leaves behind her brother, Kevin (Elizabeth) Rogers; and a sister, Tracy (Philip) Paquin. Her legacy includes seven nieces and nephews, 10 grandnieces and -nephews, and her dog, Bo.

Her family mourns her passing with deep sorrow as we have lost the kindest, most generous person we have ever known.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 13, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, Millsboro.

Donations may be made to Brandywine Valley SPCA, BVSPCA.orgScroll down for “to honor life.”
