One of Lewes' most beloved holiday traditions, the 44th Annual Christmas Tour of Lewes, is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. The tour will benefit the Lewes Historical Society and is presented by Chesapeake Group at UBS Financial Services. Advance tickets are $25; tickets purchased the day of the tour are $30. Children under 12 will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Tickets may be purchased at the society's Museum Store at 302 Savannah Road, at corner of Savannah Road and Third Street. Tickets from online sales and phone requests will be held at the Museum Store.
Tickets can also be purchased at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Lewes History Museum (both Kings Highway), or The Inn at Canal Square on Front Street. In Rehoboth Beach, tickets may be purchased at Browseabout Books on Rehoboth Avenue.
A wonderful selection of homes is on this year's tour. "The purpose of the tour is not only to experience the fabric of Lewes history and to learn about great architecture, but to recognize Lewes as both historic and contemporary," said Lewes Historical Society Director Mike DiPaolo.
Houses on tour will include:
- 344 Pilottown Road, home of Stephanie and Barry Boright
- 524 Kings Highway, home of Linda Madrid and Amy Frederick
- 8 Nebraska Ave., home of Sue and Dave Baker
- 9 DeVries Circle, home of Caryl and George Williams
- 328 Market St., home of Stacy Kerr and CR Wooters
- 15 DeVries Circle, home of Marva and Jeff Heckert
- 121 East Third St., home of Brenda Jones
- 122 Bayview Ave., home of Carol and Dave Smith
- 1014 Bay Ave., home of Fena and Andy Macdonald
Beyond the nine private homes on tour this year, the society's museums will be open and decorated for the season. During the tour, The Lewes Historical Society will host a Christmas Collectibles Sale at the Ellegood House at Third and Shipcarpenter streets on the Lewes Historic Campus. It will be a wonderful chance to do a bit of shopping for the holidays featuring a selection of small furniture, collectables, dishware, jewelry and more. Outside of the house will be a Holiday Greens Sale featuring fresh magnolia, pine and holly (while supplies last).
On the grounds of the Lewes Historical Society Campus, living history characters will be preparing their daily meal over a small encampment fire making a traditional sailors and soldiers ham and potato stew with cornbread. A historically inspired dish spanning generations, from the winter at Valley Forge in 1777 where the Fighting Delaware Blue Hens were stationed fighting against the British to the early 19th century. Come warm yourself by the fire, explore the past, engage our ancestors in lively discussion, and enjoy holiday decorations of a bygone era on display inside of the historic properties.
Christmas Tour of Lewes tickets and a great selection of gifts will be on hand at the Society's Museum Gift Shop, located at 302 Savannah Road (at the corner of Third Street and Savannah Road). Society members are invited to enjoy a 10 percent discount on all Museum Gift Shop items.
