Sussex Tech Adult Ed receives health professions grant

The Sussex Tech Adult Education division received a $178,729 grant issued by the Delaware Department of Labor, Division of Employment and Training. The funds will be used to provide high-quality occupational skills training for adults who are interested in the health professions. “We are excited to have monies available to help support students in learning skills and earning nationally recognized credentials through participation in our programs,” said Michell R. Doyle, RN, BSN, health professions coordinator. The grant funds become effective Saturday, July 1, when the 2023-24 fiscal year begins. UUSD to meet May 14

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will hold an in-person and livestreamed service at 10 a.m., Sunday, May 14, with the message topic, Know the Wells. The Rev. Heather Rion Starr said, “‘We drink from wells we did not dig,’ it is written in the Hebrew Scriptures in the Old Testament. On this Mother’s Day, we will reflect upon the impact of three inspirational, incredibly persevering and under-recognized mothers. Drawing upon Anna Malaika Tubbs’ book, ‘The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation,’ we will consider the ways we and our country are all shaped by those who came before us.” For more information, go to uussd.org.

First State Antique Tractor Club to meet May 16

The regular meeting of the First State Antique Tractor Club will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 16, at the Greenwood VFW, at the corner of Governors Avenue and Mill Street, Greenwood. In addition to discussing new business, the club will be finalizing plans for its annual show set for Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, at the Laurel Farmers Auction Market. Vietnam Veterans to meet May 16

Vietnam Veterans of America, Sussex County Chapter 1105, will hold its monthly meeting, optional 50/50 raffle and luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 16, at American Legion Post 28, 31768 Legion Road, Millsboro. All U.S. veterans who served on active duty in Vietnam during the Vietnam era are welcome. To learn more, contact Joe at 302-542-3889.

Na Na’s Candy Kloudz fundraising shop to open May 18

Run Saniyah Run and Na Na’s Candy Kloudz - Organic Cotton Candy will soon be opening a retail fundraising store in the Midway Assembly of God parking lot along Route 1 south of Lewes. Pastor Gary Hayden and congregation support the special needs population, and the church donated space for the shop. 

The nonprofit assists families who have children with special needs, and a special grand opening will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, May 18, for these families, friends and supporters.

Operating hours will be 12 to 8 p.m., seven days a week. Employees are young adults ages 18 to 25 who have special needs, as well as seniors volunteering their time.

Another ribbon-cutting event with the Delaware Small Business Chamber is set for 1 p.m., Friday, May 26, when local businesses will take part in the fun.
