David S. Bates, Postal Service retiree

David S. Bates, 69, formerly of Havertown, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born April 26, 1949, the son of the late Samuel S. Bates and Doris Bates. David was a U.S. Marine who proudly served his country in Vietnam. David retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2004. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and days at the Delaware shore, but mostly he enjoyed spending time with, and doting on, his children and grandchildren

He is survived by his grade school sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Catherine (Staub) Bates; his son Brandon David Bates (Marjorie); his daughters, Samantha Bates and Mara Bates Manfre (Gregory); as well as eight grandchildren.

Church services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Church of the Annunciation B.V.M. in Havertown, Pa., preceded by a visitation for family and friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m., also at Annunciation B.V.M.
