The Delaware Tech softball squad moved to 10-2 on the season after defeating Montgomery County Community College and Community College Baltimore County - Catonsville in twin doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday at their Georgetown campus.
The ladies of Del Tech scored a 19-0 win in the opening game with Montgomery County Community College and followed with a 19-0 second-game victory. They kept the bats hot on Sunday with an 11-1 win in game one with CCBC-Catonsville and 11-0 in the second. Del Tech outscored their opponents 60-1 on the weekend.
In the first game, Delmar’s Paige Lynch went 3-for-3 with five RBIs, while former Cape standout Kaniah James and Logan Walls of Delmar knocked in three runs each. Milford’s Macey Myers and Sussex Tech’s Jakayla Sample each had two RBIs. The team tallied 14 hits in the game. Sussex Tech’s Tori Henry, Colonel Richardson’s Kaylie Moore and Delmar’s Sydney Tyndall each had an RBI.
Pitcher Lauren Smith out of Snow Hill High School struck out eight Mustangs batters, improving her record to 5-0 on the season. She teamed with Caitlin Pontak of Newark Charter for a no-hitter in the circle.
The Del Tech team picked up the win in the second game, slamming hot shots like in the first stanza. They delivered 13 hits, while Laurel’s Rachel Calloway, Sussex Central’s Carly Collins and Caitlin Pontak teamed in the circle for a one-hitter.
Jada Courtney of Caesar Rodney led Del Tech, going 3-for-4 and knocking in four runs. Macey Myers had three RBIs, while Tori Henry, Macey Myers and Kaylie Moore had two RBIs each.
The second MCCC win gave head coach Guy Wilkins his 100th victory at Del Tech.
“I feel like we did an amazing job coming together as a team resulting in a 4-0 weekend,” said Del Tech catcher Kelsey Kormanik. “Everyone’s bats were on fire, and our pitchers killed it on the mound. Overall, I am grateful to be back on the field with this great group of girls.”
The Sunday doubleheader started off with the Tech bats staying hot; Courtney picked up three RBIs with a walk-off homer to end the game in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.
Myers knocked in two runs. Walls, Moore and Milford’s Courtney Kohel each had one RBI in the 11-1 first-game victory.
Smith picked up her sixth win on the season, striking out five Cardinals while allowing only five hits.
The second game found Sussex Tech’s Colleen Cosbey delivering two RBIs on two hits. Myers, Calloway, Moore, Tyndall, Courtney, Smith and Milford’s Julia Reed each garnered an RBI.
Pontak moved to 3-1 on the season, throwing a three-hitter and striking out three Cardinals batters.
“I felt our bats were a huge role in our 4-0 weekend,” said pitcher Lauren Smith. “The pitchers did a great job along with defense when needing to make a play in the field. I cannot wait to see where this team takes us this season.”
“I have a great bunch of girls that love to play softball and have fun,” said head coach Guy Wilkins. “I'm fortunate to have the sticks we have, and our pitching and defense have been great. The girls are playing really well.”
Del Tech plays in Region 19 of the the National Junior College Athletic Association. They will travel to Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa., for a game Saturday, April 17.
