The Delaware Seashore Parrot Head Club will be partying with a purpose again when it hosts the 16th Annual Boat Drinks Bacchanal event from noon to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at Northbeach Restaurant and Bayside Bar in Dewey Beach. The event will take place in support of Sussex County Habitat for Humanity and the Children’s Learning Garden in Lewes.
Since 1991, through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Sussex County Habitat for Humanity has built 75 homes in Sussex County. The philosophy is simple: Habitat provides a hand up, not a handout.
Families are selected on the basis of the need for housing, ability to pay a no-profit, no-interest mortgage and their willingness to partner. Homeowner candidates invest sweat equity by helping build their homes and the homes of others. Mortgage payments go into Habitat’s Fund for Humanity and are used to build more houses with more families in the future. For more information go to www.sussexcountyhabitat.org.
The Children’s Learning Garden will create an environment where families are invited to participate in the growing of local fruits, vegetables and flowers. The garden will provide hands-on experiences through supervised and planned activities by Lewes In Bloom volunteers and members of the community. It will also provide opportunities for enhancing the children’s storytelling program of the Lewes Public Library in Stango Park at 111 Adams Ave. The website is www.lewesinbloom.org.
The Parrot Heads have invited Jimmy and the Parrots to provide live entertainment. For more than 11 years, Jimmy and the Parrots have been playing to delighted crowds all over the United States as well as the Caribbean. In July 2010, the band was part of the National Flagship Celebration for the S.S. United States, and plans call for Jimmy Maraventano’s song about the ship - “Symbol of America” - to be included in the upcoming updated documentary, “Lady in Waiting.”
The band was named 2012 Entertainer of the Year at the Trop Rock Music Awards held in Key West, Fla. Jimmy and the Parrots perform not only all the great Buffett songs, they also play new and classic rock ‘n' roll, as well as outstanding original songs written by lead singer/guitarist Maraventano.
