Delmarva Christian volleyball defeats CR in DIAA quarterfinal

Royals play Saint Mark’s in semis

Then Delmarva Christian volleyball squad is headed to the DIAA semifinals following a 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 15-8 victory over Caesar Rodney Nov. 8 at St. Elizabeth’s. The Royals will play Saint Mark’s Thursday, Nov. 10 at Saint Mark’s High School.

They are the first Sussex County school to advance this far in the DIAA tournament even though they are one of the the smallest schools in the state (103 girls and 82 boys).

Sophomore Elaina Millaway led the Royals with 28 kills, 29 digs and five aces. Ellie Millaway put down 15 kills and bumped 20 digs. Tessa Kwiatkowski collected 29 assists, six aces and seven digs. Little sister Maggie put up 18 assists and blocked four CR kill attempts to along with two aces and nine digs. Senior libero Lily Fetterman bumped 20 digs and garnered three assists. Senior blocker Evelyn Jensen served four aces and roofed five blocks. Valencia-Lydel Mbuagbaw and Kaylan Yoder teamed for six blocks.

“I’m feeling so many emotions,” said senior setter Tessa Kwiatkowski. “Sadness, excitement, joy. This is the the most joy I’ve felt in my volleyball career. I love playing with this team. I’m just so proud of everyone. We’ve felt so much excitement from the student section. It was so great.” 

“These girls just dig deep when they need to and they have been doing it since day one,” said Royals head coach Mike Zampini. “I think it should be obvious to the state now that volleyball is growing. It’s not just northern Delaware anymore; it’s good throughout the state.”

Alexandra Mardesich and Melissa Eddy led the Riders with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Alyssa Diem put up 15 assists. Reagan White was credited with five blocks.
