The Delmarva Christian volleyball team’s sisters combinations of Ellie and Elaina Millaway, and Tessa and Maggie Kwiatkowski paced the Royals to a 23-25, 25-19, 25-21 and 27-25 victory over perennial powerhouse Caesar Rodney Sept. 13 at home.
Sophomore Elaina Millaway knocked down 22 kills and bumped 25 digs, while older sister senior Ellie slammed 20 kills and 12 digs. They have 84 kills in two games. Senior Tessa Kwiatkowski assisted on 30 points, while little sis Maggie, a junior, helped on 22 winning points.
“I thought we did really well keeping our unforced errors down,” said Ellie. “We gave up some points in the beginning and then in the end of the fourth set, but the fact that we came back and won the final set was great. It definitely motivates both Elaina and I to play together on the same team. As sisters, we are able to push each other a little harder and hopefully get to that next level. It also creates a little extra friendly competition, which pushes us even harder.”
“I was really proud of our performance tonight,” said Elaina. “Playing as a team really helped us. When one of us would get a little down, the others on the team would build us back up. That overall helps everyone’s performance.”
Senior libero Lily Fetterman recorded 51 digs in the match – she has 73 for the first two games.
“They were a very good team,” said Fetterman. “They tried to keep the ball away from us in different spots, but our talking and keeping the energy up helped us work together as a team even when we were out of system. The crowd really gave us more energy. It really helped propel us to the win.”
Tobi Robinson scored nine digs, while Valencia Mbuagban roofed three blocks and Addy Benjamin scored four kills and two blocks.
“I felt like the girls didn’t let anything get into their heads this time like the match with Cape,” said Royals head coach Mike Zampini. “They worked through everything and played their game. We’ve had really good practices the last few days, and I was really happy with our rotation.”
The Royals travel to Dover Monday, Sept. 19, to face the Senators.
