District 3 outfielder Sierra Livingston drove a walk-off double to score Jordyn DiFava in the bottom of the 12th inning to end a tense pitchers’ duel in the second round robin game of the Senior Softball World Series in Roxana.
“I’ve been in a big slump lately,” said Livingston. “I’m glad I got out of it tonight and helped my team.”
Taylor Wroten pitched a complete game for District 3, striking out six batters and scattering seven hits and one walk.
“I’ve gone 10 innings in multiple games, but never 12,” said Wroten. “We changed the approach a little bit for them and tried to throw my backdoor curveball, which came at them and jammed their hands up. It was hard going 12 innings because we saw the lineup so many times. We were just trying to keep them off balance and give them a pitch that they would ground out or pop up and not be able to hit on their sweet spot. It’s all about adjusting, and I had 12 innings to adjust.”
The District 3 All-Stars delivered with 11 hits. Kylie Kruger went 3-for-4 and knocked in a run, while Siera Jones went 3-for-3, Ryleigh Elliott went 2-for-6, Kelsey Kormanik went 1-for-5 and DiFava went 1-for-6.
Southwest drew first blood when Haylie Mitchell scored in the first inning on a District 3 error. Georgetown tied it up in the bottom of the inning when Elliott scored on a single by Kruger. It remained a tie game until the bottom of the 12th, when DiFava hit a ground ball and reached first on an error. Kruger laid down a sac bunt to move DiFava to second. Then Livingston doubled to right to score DiFava and win the game.
“It was a nail-biter,” said District 3 manager Craig Kormanik. “Both pitchers were out there throwing all the batters off. It was definitely a pitchers’ duel. Taylor is a workhorse out there. The longer the game went, the better she got. We were just fortunate to finally adapt and adjust to their pitcher.”
He credited coach Robin Wroten with doing a great job calling pitches and keeping their hitters off balance all night.
“This team is special. We have 12 people on the team, but at any given time, you can put anyone in and they will pull through for you,” he said.
District 3 moves on to play Latin America Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 12:30 p.m.
