Donald R. Ziegler, accomplished accountant
Donald R. Ziegler, 86, of Lewes passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, at The Moorings at Lewes. He was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Lancaster, Pa., son of the late John Jacob Ziegler and Esther Mae (McKelly) Ziegler.
Mr. Ziegler graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in 1954 with a degree in economic accounting. A CPA, he spent his entire career with Price Waterhouse, and was admitted into the partnership in 1967, was promoted to managing partner of the Mid-Atlantic Region in 1978, and was subsequently promoted to vice chairman of the South-East Region in 1985. He held a number of senior board positions with Price Waterhouse, including serving as a member of the Policy Board and the Management Committee. Mr. Ziegler was recruited to serve as a member of the AICPA’s Auditing Standards Executive Committee from 1973-76 where he served as chairman of the Subcommittee on Fraud. He co-authored the book “Managing and Accounting for Inventories,” and was a contributing author to various books in his field.
Don was generous with his time, talent and resources. He was a trustee of his beloved alma mater for over 25 years, and served on various committees during his tenure. He served on many other committees and boards, including the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Southern Delaware Surgery Center, the Beebe Medical Center Board, the Beebe Medical Foundation, and the audit committee for the Town of Dewey Beach. He also generously supported a number of other charities.
In 1991 Don was awarded the Distinguished Service Alumni Medal from Franklin & Marshall, and received the Outstanding Soldier Award for his time with the U.S. Army in 1955. He was recently presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who’s Who.
Don was well travelled and loved taking his extended family on exotic vacations. A member of the Rehoboth Beach Country Club, he was an avid golfer with six career holes-in-one and an IVB Golf Classic Pro Am championship. He played football in high school and college, and was an Eagles season ticket holder for 47 years. He enjoyed watching wrestling, ballet and theater, playing gin, cribbage and bridge, doing crossword puzzles and Sudokus, and reading detective, mystery and adventure novels. He loved spending time with his wife, Suzanne, and family, and was a proud and supportive father to his sons.
Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Suzanne (Foster) Ziegler; three sons: Donald Rand Ziegler (Marci) of Lenexa, Kan., Scott Foster Ziegler (Laurie) of Fairfield, Pa., and Kurt John Ziegler (Linda) of Afton, Va.; six grandchildren: Justin, Karissa, Andrew, Daniel, Derek and Sarah; and two great-grandchildren: Ethan and Jonathan.
A Celebration of the Life of Mr. Ziegler will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m.
