Dontay Black remembered for his support of basketball

January 22, 2025

The late Dontay Black was honored at Dontay Black Memorial Night Jan. 15, as Beacon Middle School took on Providence Creek in boys’ and girls’ basketball. Cape assistant coach Solomon Cox and Providence Creek Athletic Director Jaclyn Ivry presented a tribute to Dontay’s mother, Trina Black.

Dontay was a basketball coach at Cape, Smyrna JV, and he was the Providence Creek athletic director. He also started the Cougars’ basketball travel team and Saints Madness, a night of fun for both boys’ and girls’ basketball teams to kick off the season at Providence Creek.

“Dontay was a true legend in our community,” said Cox, who was coached by him and against him at Cape. “He believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. He always treated his players like family. He was a great positive role model who always showed you love and made you feel comfortable. He was a great role model, a great coach, a great son and a great father. I miss him very much.”

“Dontay was more than just a coach to our athletes,” said Ivry. “He was a friend, a father figure and an inspiration to every life he came in contact with. Dontay’s legacy follows us each and every day through the things he’s created and his two talented children, Kenyon and Donovan.”
