Douglas C. Jones, longtime fireman

Douglas Carl Jones, 58, of Bridgeville, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on May 22, 1953, in Milford, son of the late Carl C. Jones and Martha Hastings Jones.

During high school he worked for H.C. Layton, Hopkins Brothers and then Conrail for 10 years. Following those early years, he was employed for 25 years by the Town of Bridgeville, retiring as water superintendent in May of this year.

He was a 40-year life member of the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Co. Inc., where he had served in many capacities including president, chief engineer and first assistant chief. He was most proud of having served as the chairperson for the restoration of the 1936 Reo fire truck. In his spare time he loved fishing, hunting, and football, watching NASCAR and doing yard work.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Joan Jones; his daughter Jamie Ellen Jones of Bridgeville; two brothers, Larry C. Jones and his wife Beverly of Milford, and Harold J. Jones Sr. and his wife Stephanie of Seaford; a niece, Kelly Erin Jones of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a nephew, Harold J. Jones Jr. of Glen Burnie, Md.

Funeral services with full fireman’s honors will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company, 315 Market St., Bridgeville, where friends may call beginning at 1 p.m. Friends may also call Saturday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville. Burial will be in Bridgeville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions are suggested to the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance, P.O. Box 727, Bridgeville, DE 19933.
