Elizabeth 'Betty' Shields, avid gardener

Elizabeth “Betty” M. Shields, 79, of Lewes passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, in her residence at Cadbury of Lewes. She was born to the late John and Mary Donahue May 7, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Elizabeth graduated from Kensington High School, Philadelphia, in 1953. She was predeceased by her husband of 33 years, Robert J. Shields and she is survived by her two sons, Joseph R. Shields and Michael J. Shields; and her three grandchildren, Benjamin R., Harrison M. and Caroline C. Shields.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her brother John Donahue and nephew Jack Donahue of Croydon, Pa. and is survived by her sister Mary Donahue of Lewes and her seven nieces, Jacqueline Quigley, Aliza Coventry, Stephanie Dorman, Meghan Mitchell, Lorraine Schweizerhof, Susan Thompson, and Cathy Stewart Ray.

Betty enjoyed spending time with family and friends and living near the water where she was surrounded by nature. She was also an avid gardener and she found happiness tending to her plants in her yard with her late dog Barley. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and being an active member of her neighborhood of 11 years at the Cove on Heron Creek.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m., at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a contribution to a charity of your choice in her name.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
