The University of Delaware’s third annual Chicken Chase 5K and 1-Mile Walk runners left The Starboard and rambled over the Silver Lake Bridge to the Rehoboth Boardwalk turnaround, then headed back. The June 8 race attracted 196 runners and several teams, including the Mother Cluckers, Sweek Sprinters, Certified Running Nuts, and Fuscas and Friends.
The race was fast at the front, with the top eight runners breaking 20 minutes. Joey Cintavey, 23, of Newark (16:20) and Brian Louis, 38, of West Chester, Pa., (16:41) put separation anxiety on the following field.
Kyle Brightbill, 49, of Philly was third overall and masters champion. He was followed by Joey Andrisani, 41, of Wilmington in 18:31.
Katie Plassio, 22, of Irwin, Pa., was first female in 18:46. Sarah Richards, 39, of Rehoboth Beach was second overall female in 19:57.
Bobby Hutton, 60, of Rehoboth Beach broke the 20-minute barrier for a time of 19:59.
Katie Kuhlman, 18, a University of Delaware cross country runner, won the 14-18 female age group in 22:42.
The 19-29 female group saw 20-year-old twin sisters Tiffany Banning (20:04) and Sammy Banning (21:51) of Middletown finish 1-2.
The 40-49 female age group was won by Mary Rice, 48, of Manheim, Pa., in 26:37, followed by Stephanie Hartsoe, 41, of Milton in 30:05 and Cyndi Hartsoe, 41, of Newark in 30:06.
Joanne Senft, 54, of Mount Wolf, Pa., won the 50-59 age group in 24:44, followed by Mary Beth Hutton, 58, of Rehoboth Beach in 29:27.
Susannah Baden, 61, of Rehoboth Beach ran 28:30 while Joy Biser, 68, of Long Neck crossed in 28:57 to go 1-2 in the 60-69 age group.
Landon Putt, 12, of Reading, Pa., ran 23:34, followed by Bennett Curry, 11, of Lewes in 27:49 to capture the top two places in the 13-and-under age group.
Jake Timmons, 16, of Dagsboro ran 21:21 to win the 14-18 age group.
The 70-99 age group was won by Doug Repetti, 73, of Lewes in 28:07, followed by John Walters, 71, of Lewes in 28:37. Jim Batts, 82, of Millsboro ran 38:34.
The next Races2Run event at the beach is the sixth annual SoDel Cares 5K at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 15, at Thompson Island Brewing Co. in Rehoboth Beach.
