The Rehoboth Film Society and the Rehoboth Art League will co-present "Artisan Workshop: Steve Rogers," a film on local artist and Rehoboth Art League member Steve Rogers, at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 19. The film features a biography of Rogers as well as his painting process from initial concept to finished work. It also includes his advice to aspiring artists.
Rogers continues to be fascinated by ships, the sea, marshlands and boatyards. He is constantly amazed by the craftsmanship, design and beauty found in the building of a ship, or even a simple skiff. He has made it a point to study the boats and ships he renders in his work, which has helped him in both his paintings and the ship models he has built. His resources include materials that are available in books, as well as in plan form, found in many museums and historical societies.
The Artisan Workshop is an ongoing series by Producer/Director Dr. Len Shyles. The purpose of the series is to "reveal the creative process of artists and artisans at work." Shyles invited Rogers to collaborate on this film, which took two months.
Other films in this series include: "Artisan Workshop: Harry Havnoonian," which introduces a custom bicycle frame designer, and "Artisan Workshop: Robert Bedford," featuring a concert pianist and teacher who uses the Alexander Technique in his teaching and performances.
Shyles has a PhD in communication from the Ohio State University. He has been a video writer, producer, director and editor for over 30 years, producing videos on a continuing basis while teaching video production at the university level. His work has aired on PBS television stations and cable channels. He is the author of "The Art of Video: Video Production in the Digital Age." Shyles recently retired as an associate professor at Villanova University's Department of Communications.
Admisssion for this one-time screening is $15, which includes refreshments before the screening, the film presentation, and a post-screening Q&A session with both Rogers and Shyles. The event will take place at the Cinema Art Theater at 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Lewes. For advance ticket sales, go to www.rehobothfilm.com.
