First day of school in the books for Cape students, staff

6,500 Vikings enrolled in district’s nine schools in Milton, Lewes and Rehoboth Beach

With the start of another academic year comes another student attendance record for the Cape district, as about 6,500 Vikings filed into schools Sept. 6.

At last year’s Sept. 30 unit count, 6,336 students were enrolled in the district’s nine schools, said Assistant Superintendent Jenny Nauman, who noted staff are excited to move into the new school year, and welcome the 10-month staff and students.

“The 12-month staff have been busy this summer preparing for the upcoming school year, ensuring our buildings look spectacular, creating the best professional development opportunities and streamlining all operations to ensure we have a smooth start to the 2023-24 school year,” Nauman said.

Next year, Frederick D. Thomas Middle will open in Lewes as the district’s third middle school.
