First Festival of Hope benefits area's homeless

August 22, 2011

Sponsored by TAP FAITH – Talented Address-less People for Affordable Innovative Transitional Housing – and Georgetown Presbyterian Church, the first Festival of Hope helped to raise awareness and funds for local homeless projects. The Aug. 13 event featured nonstop entertainment, yard and art sales, a watermelon-eating contest and vendors.

The Rev. Don Disharoon, one of the organizers of the event, said proceeds would be split between the church to support missions projects and TAP FAITH to defray transitional home costs.

TAP FAITH last month opened Meghan House, a women’s only shelter in downtown Georgetown. Group founder Jim Martin said the organization was able to negotiate with the landlord to get a two-month grace period on the rent to get the house up and running. Up to seven women can be housed in the shelter at a cost of $120 per week.

The shelter is open to women who are homeless for a variety of reasons including divorce, domestic violence or those just released from prison.
