In tribute to slain Delmar Police Cpl. Heath Heacook, hundreds of police officers from throughout Delaware and Maryland joined together May 10 at Emmanuel Wesleyan Church in Salisbury, Md., to memorialize the 22-year law-enforcement veteran.
Heacook, 54, died April 28 at Baltimore Shock Trauma, three days after he was brutally attacked as he answered a call reporting a fight in progress at a Delmar residence.
Heacook was escorted from Short Funeral Home in Delmar to the church, where visitation lasted two hours. Following the service, he was escorted back to Delmar where family and friends held private interment.
Delmar police officers serve on both sides of the Delaware and Maryland state line.
Heacook, a 1986 Cape Henlopen High School graduate, served four years at Wicomico County Detention Center before joining the Delmar Police Department in 1998. He leaves behind his wife, Susan, and 12-year-old son Matthew.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to support the Delmar Police Crime Prevention Fund, c/o Delmar Police Department, 102 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Delmar, MD 21875.
