Garland ‘Jay’ Hornsby Jr., avid drag racer

Garland "Jay" Lawson Hornsby Jr., 73, of Bridgeville passed away Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, at Delaware Hospice Center. He was born June 19, 1947, in Salisbury, Md., son of the late Garland Lawson Hornsby and Loretta Lee Dykes.

Mr. Hornsby honorably served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Saratoga and the USS Hancock during the Vietnam War. He had a lifelong career working for DuPont at the nylon plant in Seaford, retiring as the safety manager after more than 41 dedicated years. Following retirement, Mr. Hornsby worked for several years as a parts delivery driver for Manlove Auto Parts in Georgetown. He was a past commander of VFW 4961 in Seaford and American Legion in Laurel. Mr. Hornsby was an avid drag racer, and enjoyed coaching and working with the pit crew for his son, who followed in his racing footsteps. His happy spot was at the track, and he loved spending time there with his "racing family."

Mr. Hornsby is survived by his beloved wife, Sherion W. Hornsby of Bridgeville; his sons: David Hornsby (Denise) of Delmar, Kevin Hornsby (Rebecca) of Greenwood and Keith Hornsby of Seaford; his daughter, Cathy Hodges (Steve) of Bristol, Pa.; his stepdaughter, Quincy O'Mahony (Mike) of Ranger, Ga.; his sisters: Sylvia Rolinson of Laurel  and Dolores Palmer (Preston) of Laurel; his grandchildren: John Hodges, Chris Hodges, Landon O'Mahony, Ryleigh O'Mahony; and his furry companions: Fox and Topper. 

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church, 10016 Concord Road, Seaford, where friends may visit beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, Bridgeville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Mr. Hornsby's memory to the First Baptist Church of Seaford, 10016 Concord Road, Seaford, DE  19973.
