George Greer MacMasters Jr., veteran, loved the sea

October 31, 2024

George Greer MacMasters Jr., 88, known affectionately as Greer by those who loved him, passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024, in Lewes, surrounded by his family. He was born Oct. 8, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pa. Greer carved a life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and an enduring love for the sea.

Greer's formative years unfolded in North Wilmington with the guidance of his late parents, Gertrude S. and George G. MacMasters. His relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to proudly graduate from A.I. DuPont High School in 1954, where he was president of his class and organized his high school reunions for over 60 years. After high school, Greer went on to earn a bachelor of science degree from University of Delaware in 1958. He honorably served in the U.S. Army and Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he nurtured his leadership skills and unwavering discipline.

After his service, Greer embarked on a successful career, ultimately rising to the position of vice president at All American Engineering Company. He was a member of Conley’s Methodist Church in Lewes. In his free time, life by the water was Greer's sanctuary. An avid boater and fisherman, he found solace in the waves. If not at sea, he could be found perfecting his bowling strike or heartily cheering for his beloved University of Delaware football team. Greer's camaraderie shone brightly within the Twinkle Club, where his warmth and laughter will be deeply missed.

Greer's legacy lives on through his cherished companion, Helen Badur of Millsboro, and her loving family; his four devoted children, Deborah Milner of Millsboro, Wayne MacMasters (Deborah) of Newport News, Va., Linda Smith (Stephen) of Millsboro, and Elaine Balcerak (John) of Dover. He was also blessed with 10 grandchildren, Alicia, Taylor, Kevin, Courtney, Julia, Christopher, Hunter, Julia, Grace and Aiden; and two great-grandchildren, Tristan and Bowen.

In addition to his parents, Greer was predeceased by his aunt, Genevieve Walker; and cousin, Elaine Benke.

Greer’s life embodied honor, strength, and joy. The memories he created will forever be treasured by those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at Conely’s United Methodist Church, 33106 Jolyns Way, Lewes, where family and friends may begin visiting at noon. Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Greer’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601, act.alz.org
