Georgetown’s Sierra Livingston doubled with two on base in the bottom of the sixth to give the District 3 All-Stars a 3-1 lead over Latin America Aug. 2, and they went on to win by the same score in the third game of pool play at the Senior League World Series in Roxana. Taylor Wroten homered in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.
“I knew that she was throwing a lot of outside pitches,” said Livingston, a rising sophomore at Sussex Tech. “I was waiting for my pitch, and it was there, so I said I gotta go for it, so I went for it.”
“It was just a matter of time before she got ahold of one,” said Delaware manager Craig Kormanik. “It couldn’t have come at a better time.”
Wroten was equally as lethal in the circle, as she struck out six Latin American batters, taking her total to 25 in the three pool play games.
Karmary Gonzalez took the loss for Latin America.
Jakayla Sample and Madi Parker added the other District 3 hits.
“We have a very talented team that did not lose their composure when we were behind, “ said Kormanik. “I guess we were just waiting for the right moment. We were having a little trouble hitting their pitcher [Gonzalez]. They [Latin America] were an excellent fielding team. The small ball wasn’t working for us, so we had to wait for our big bats to wake up and come around, which took a little bit of time, but it happened.”
Taylor Wroten’s home run came at the right time for the Delaware squad.
“Taylor is strong all around,” said Kormanik. “It came at the right time, the right place, the right moment, and it sparked the team and the team took it from there.”
With the win, Georgetown improves to 3-0 in pool play and is guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals. They will face undefeated Asia Pacific at 3 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 3, to determine the winner of Pool A.
Georgetown beats Southwest
Wroten and Ryleigh Elliott each slugged three hits for Delaware in the 11-1 mercy rule shortened victory over Southwest Aug. 1 in pool play of the Senior Softball World Series in Roxana. The Delaware squad had 16 hits in the contest.
Wroten put six Southwest batters in the book via the strikeout. She has struck out 19 batters in the tournament so far.
Jakayla Sample drove in two runs for the District 3 All-Stars.
Delaware was sure-handed in the field, committing no errors.
“We broke open the bats tonight,” said Delaware manager Craig Kormanik. “Taylor [Wroten] had another stellar performance. Our team came together, and we executed well and that gave us the win. The Southwest is a classy team. We’re very fortunate to be playing in the World Series and looking forward to tomorrow’s game because it’s another tough one.”
Georgetown opens series with a win
Wroten struck out 13 batters to lead the District 3 All-Stars to a 4-3 win over New York July 31 in the opening game of the 2017 Senior Softball World Series in Roxana.
Jordyn DiFava went yard with a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning to help lift her team to the W over the Haverstraw, N.Y. team.
The Delaware team drew first blood, picking up three runs in the second inning and one more in the fourth to seal the deal. Sample led off the second with a triple, then Wroten drove her in with a bunt single. Catcher Kelsey Kormanik drove Wroten in with a groundout. DiFava then slammed a ball over the right-field fence. Wroten singled in the third to score Corin Farris.
“They [New York] were a really good team. They came back when I struggled a bit finding the zone,” said Wroten. “But my defense had my back and we got out of it, and we came out on top.”
New York scored three runs in the top of the fourth with a two-run triple and an RBI single.
Kormanik was quick to praise his opponent’s effort.
“We knew going into this game that they were a strong New York team,” said Kormanik. “They fought hard to get here. We were fortunate to put this one off.”
