The 2-0 Beacon Middle School girls’ volleyball team hosted 4-0 Georgetown Middle Oct. 4. Entering the match, neither team had lost a set.
When the dust settled, Georgetown claimed the 2-0 win.
Strategy was the first weapon the Knights used to build a commanding lead in the first set.
“I think the first set was a little wonky because [Georgetown] was in a lineup they hadn’t normally been in,” said Beacon assistant coach Alison Palmer.
Palmer said her team managed it well, but the Knights’ formation caused some confusion. She said one of the strengths of her team is communication, but they weren’t communicating as well as they could be.
“Georgetown had great serving,” she said. “And that is an area – our serve receive – that could have been better, but this is the first time we had consistently seen serves that hard. I think it was really good for them to see and for them to know they are really good at serve receive. But when those balls come a little bit harder, that’s an area we can improve on.”
The Knights' serves were complemented by strong play at the net, including a few kills scored from above the net by eighth-grader Paige Nicholson. Taking the first set 25-13, Georgetown seemed thoroughly in control of the match. The Vikings would not go down without a fight, as they built an early lead in the must-win second set.
Before Beacon could expand its lead, Georgetown came storming back. In the end, it was the Knights whose unblemished record would remain intact as they closed out the match with a 25-14 second-set win.
There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the Beacon girls’ volleyball season.
“They do work really well together, and we have a few new players on the team this year,” Palmer said, noting what good friends her team members are on and off the court.
“So much more to come, so much more growth to be had, and hopefully we get a little better every day,” she said.
Beacon’s next match will be at 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 9, in Selbyville.
