Groome Church to present concert in Canalfront Park Aug. 6
The Groome Church performing arts series and the Overfalls Foundation will celebrate Lewes' maritime history with a performance by Songs of the Sea singer and multi-instrumentalist Charlie Zahm from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 6, in Lewes Canalfront Park.
Zahm will be accompanied by guitarist Steve Hobson and Bob Hurst on accordion. Admission is free. Attendees may bring blankets and lawn chairs.
“When the opportunity arose to again present Charlie Zahm in concert, the Overfalls and Groome were happy to bring back one of the area’s favorite performers. Groome and Overfalls both have a maritime history and enjoy a collaborative relationship, so having Charlie back to sing songs of the sea and celebrate Lewes’ maritime heritage was an easy decision,” said the Rev. Dr. Willard Crossan III, Groome Church pastor.
Zahm said, “Last summer, I had the good fortune of performing for the first time in lovely Canalfront Park with a setting sun and the lightship as a backdrop; just spectacular. I was also schooled on and got a tour of the Overfalls; thank you for that! I love coming to Lewes; it’s a great town with loads of history and plenty of welcoming folks who always make for a great audience and a fun evening!”
In conjunction with the performance, Groome will make a donation to support Family Promise of Southern Delaware. The nonprofit group unites faith-based and other community groups to help prevent homelessness through financial aid, lodging and hospitality, and stabilization support for families with children in housing distress.
The concert is being made possible in part by the cooperation and kindness of Friends of Lewes Canalfront Park and the City of Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission.
