High Low High exhibit set at Lewes gallery May 11
Heidi Lowe Gallery will exhibit a new show, High Low High, co-produced by Chelsea Radka and Heidi Lowe. A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 11, at the gallery, 119 Front St., Lewes.
High Low High exhibition spawned when Radka, a local shop owner with First Nations Oneida/Mohawk heritage, talked with Lowe about a recent injustice toward an indigenous couple that became known to her. A renowned worldwide athletic brand reneged on an order of 200 pairs of custom handmade silver and turquoise buttons made by a Diné (Navajo) couple, Marie and Damon Thompson. These buttons were intended to be incorporated into a new collection as part of the company’s campaign to celebrate indigenous cultures and crafts and promote diversity.
With the intent to turn an unjust situation into something beautiful and thoughtful, Lowe and Radka came together and, with the Thompsons’ blessing, decided to produce an art show. They all hope it will bring more awareness to situations like these that are often overlooked.
The buttons were sold to artists for the same amount as the original deal and will be incorporated into new pieces. The buttons act as a starting point for the artists and could be used as they are or be reconfigured, deconstructed or added to in some fashion. Each artist was given the option to approach this from any perspective: as a collaboration, form of activism, formal exploration, and so forth. Each piece is a collaboration between the artist and Daman and Marie Thompson.
“Although we wish this situation had not happened, we hope this exhibition will bring some light to an otherwise disturbing journey. We are so grateful for Daman’s and Marie’s enthusiasm and support for the show and how the artists rose to the occasion and contributed with creativity, kindness, and integrity,” said Lowe.
The show will be on display through Sunday, July 7.
