Hornets work like bees to sting Seahawks in girls’ basketball

Early College School ball movement leads to win at Sussex Academy

The Sussex Academy girls’ basketball team dipped under the .500 mark following a 58-24 loss Dec. 17, to a talented squad from Early College School at Delaware State University.

“They did what they were supposed to do,” said Seahawks coach Rayona Benson. “If we can't stop it, that is what is going to be the outcome.”

The Seahawks stayed within striking distance, 16-7, after the first quarter, but the Hornets expanded their lead to nearly double up the hosts 27-14. An energetic ECS team clamped down even more in the third, winning the quarter 20-2 for a 47-16 edge heading into the fourth. High-pressure defense was the key to their dominance.

“You can't possibly win a game with that many turnovers,” Benson said. “We'll just go back to the drawing board and see how we can cut down on those.”

Sussex Academy played the final frame a bit closer, but lost the eight minutes 9-8 and the game 58-24.

Benson believes someone in the ranks needs to step up offensively, but praised the play of sophomore Grayce Glover, who led the team with 10 points and snagged 13 boards.

“We definitely need another scorer; that way it does open up for everyone,” Benson said. “Grayce has been pulling through the last couple of games. But we need somebody else stepping up to the plate.”

Hornets junior Marshay Brown certainly stepped up for her team in the contest, scoring 22 points, grabbing eight steals and seven rebounds, and delivering six assists.
