Joan A. Batchelor, devoted, loving homemaker

Joan A. Batchelor, 82, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022.

Joan was born Nov. 29, 1939, in Rehoboth Beach, in her grandparents’ home near where she grew up.  She adopted her nickname Ginger from the midwife who took care of her, saying that she reminded her of Ginger Rogers, the actress. 

After graduating high school in the original Rehoboth School in 1958, she worked at Dolle’s for two summers.  Shortly after that, she worked at Delmarva Power until she met her husband, Dick Batchelor, to whom she was married for 49.5 years.  

They had two children, one son William Floyd; and one daughter Gretchen Michele. Joan was a homemaker who loved taking care of her children. She also worked at Howard T. Ennis School for a short time as an aide helping to take care of children with mental and physical challenges. She always exclaimed that this was something she found fulfilling and enjoyed very much. Later in life, Joan was blessed with three grandchildren, Kurtus, Kristen and Hailey; and two great-grandchildren, Riley and Larsen.  

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Richard Batchelor; and a granddaughter Hailey.  

She is survived by her son, William F. Batchelor (girlfriend Jill Pagliei); daughter, Gretchen M. Campbell (husband Tony Campbell); grandson, Kurtus Batchelor (fiancée Mary Jane Socci); and granddaughter, Kristen Timothy (husband Gifford Timothy).  

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22, at Short Funeral Services chapel, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call after 1 p.m.  Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
